I find myself stuck once again with few options for getting unstuck. Thursday I flew into Jackson Hole, Wyoming for a meeting with their Public Health staff. They are having quite the struggle with trying to develop their program on the level it should be at and many of their staff see no reason to change “the way things have always been done”. There is no sense of vision, purpose, or depth for their work. That is somewhat saddening to see “professionals” with that lack of drive and motivation. They are stuck in a rut.
If you’ve followed along with me, you know two things for certain, I have been in Public Health for an excess of 20 years and I’m trying to find myself new challenge in that field, or some field. I’m beginning to think consultation is a better option these days. In this instance, they really need someone to come in without any bias and do an assessment of the community, its health, and the environment of the county and make recommendations for where they should be and how to get there. I met with these nice people for many hours Friday and could have flown out Friday evening to be home for the weekend. I didn’t do that, rather I stayed for the weekend to explore the region and see how effective the existing program s being executed. My plan was to fly out Sunday and be home late Sunday Night.
I woke up Sunday Morning and opened the drapes of my room to find it snowing with an accumulation of about 8 inches on the tree boughs in font of my window. OK, no problem; it’s time for breakfast. As I was passing he front desk, I stopped to be certain there was no issue getting shuttled to the airport later. I was greeted with a response of {{laughter}} as the airline had canceled all flights into and out of Jackson Hole. In about two hours the entire airport was closed for all flights in and out.
Delta, bless their little bitty hearts, declares there are no flights available prior to Thursday to get me back East. I’m stuck in Jackson Hole 4 days longer than originally planned. Sometimes being stuck is better than others; I’ll take being stuck here over being stuck in other situations most any day.
Now, while I’m stuck I’ve got to go get cleaned up a bit so I can go snowmobiling today!!! Skiing again tomorrow!!! And maybe snowshoeing one day too if I’m lucky and don’t get unstuck early! Some times being stuck is a pretty nice, polite way of fate telling you that you’re going to rest and take some time for fun!
Coming from Idaho and knowing how things work (or DON’T WORK) their, I know full well the “things are just fine, leave us alone” mentality. It takes real visionaries and huge drive to break that nasty dark cycle. Meanwhile, suffering and needless crap continue for those who shouldn’t have to put up with it. As for the airline thing, yup….seen it happen time and time again. Aircraft are so small into small airports…there just aren’t enough seats to accommodate any disruption in regular service. I remember hearing an announcement in an airport once: “Go home and come back on Thursday….there are no seats available until then.” It was Sunday at this point. Enjoy and relax in one of the world’s most fantastic places.
Sounds like a pretty enjoyable way to be stuck to me. Hope you have a fun lay over!
You are truly “HOLED UP” in Jackson Hole — how appropriate!
It sounds like you are rising to the occasion, though. Wonderful snow activities planned!
I wonder what the social scene (if any) is like there?
Yes, isn’t is sad to see professionals become so hide-bound? It’s good for me to remember not to get too attached to one way of doing things..
And what fun that you’ve been given an enforced snow-vacation! Glad you’re embracing the universe’s message, and getting out to have some fun.
How cool is that ?!! Sounds like fun to me. It’s finally snowing again here in KS, but were only expected to get a couple of inches that will probably melt away by tomorrow evening:( I want a BUNCH of snow to fall, and stay put for a while !!!! (and I want a golden goose too – and I want it now !!) I am so sick of parcipitation that keeps turning to wet soggy slush and then, being tracked across my kitchen floor via twenty muddy paws ! I would post a picture of my backyard (mud pit) but it’s just too sad and embarrassing.
Have tons of fun and enjoy your stay !!
Love ya,
Susan
I schedule myself out of Jackson the next day, Monday and of course the weather was beautiful and we left on time. The problem in Jackson is that virtually every flight going in and out of there is totally booked, so that when a flight is canceled, it takes several days to place all the people scheduled for that flight onto other flights that have few if any empty seats.
I have a second home there and it’s happened to me several times, even once in the summer when a bolt of lightening took out the control tower(!).
Anyhow, the snowfall there this year has been phenominal so enjoy yourself. Hit The Snake River Brewery on North Milstead near the post office for one of their $7 lunches and a Custer’s Last Ale!

just wanted 2 say thanx 4 the comment while i was sick. mean a lot 2 me. i been stuck a few times in places sure wasnt fun!
I hope you are able to make use of that time and indeed get rest and have some fun. But don’t overdo the fun part or you’ll never want to leave.
Enjoy your “vacation”! Sounds like you are making the best of it.
I’d love to get snowed in like that. I really would.
Getting stuck in a rut is the most awful feeling. Creativity, drive and passion are the things I hold very dear to me and am very worried that I might lose them all one day.
Sometimes unexpectedly when things don’t work at a place they work out well after all. One man’s meat is another man’s poison.
